- Curator's comments
- Catling placed this shape (and related sub-type 'd') no earlier than CG II-III. As Giesen has shown in her more recent study, the date range of this fibula type is now known to extend throughout the CG period and later into the CA period. Numerous comparable examples of the fibula are published in V. Karageorghis, Palaepaphos-Skales. An Iron Age cemetery in Cyprus. Ausgrabungen in Alt-Paphos 3 (Konstanz: Universitätsverlag, 1983) passim. However, given the LCII-III (and possibly earlier) date range of the accompanying material, this item is either intrusive from another burial or context or, as suggested by Harden (Glass, p. 33), not necessarily of Iron Age date. The lack of substantial amounts of post-LBA material (including sherds) from Daniel's re-excavation of the tomb (Benson 1972, 20-21 (Tomb 17-17A and Table p. 37) argues against a significant reuse of the tomb, though it was very disturbed when excavated.
