Epinetra were produced on Rhodes from the early 5th through the 4th centuries BC (Heinrich 2006, 145-59). Though based on Athenian prototypes they significantly modify their Athenian models. On some the single female head of the Athenian epinetron is replaced by heads of a woman with one or more children, perhaps reflecting the importance accorded to women as child rearers that is visible also in the prominent kourotrophos cult in the sanctuary of Athena at Lindos. Others feature simple decoration and are of such small size that they could only have been used by children, or terminate in a knob.
