- Description
-
Pottery Attic red figure guttus (oil flask with strainer) with a spout in form of a lion's head; wheel-made and with moulded and incised details; squat body, slightly splaying sides, with a convex top; flat base; the central strainer has a single hole in the middle and two outer rings of perforations; loop handle (mostly restored); vessel made of fine buff clay, decorated in red figure technique with animals on the shoulder below the strainer.
On one side of the vessel is a couchant lion, facing left, whose head is formed by the spout: the details of the head are well rendered, with incised strokes for the mane; on the other side are two couchant animals facing each other: the beast on the left has pointed ears and a long tail, jaws wide open and a determined stare emphasised by the profile view of the face with a single eye (possibly a lion); its opposite number is more crudely drawn, and is either shown in profile, or else has two snouts/heads.
Two Cypriot Syllabic signs are incised on the underside of the base.
