Fragment of Clazomenian black-figure painted pottery broad amphora. Neck, palmette as on Pl. GB 589, 2 (but with white dots in the V of the butt). Body, dots: women dancers (originally four to the panel) - that they are dancers is evident from the second woman whose left arm is raised behind her neck so that she can grasp the wrist of the third woman (as on pl. GB 590, 3 – 1888,208.73.b, which may be from the same pot). Purple for fillets and on necking ring. White for flesh.

- Curator's comments
- Both common types of Clazomenian ear are exhibited on this sherd, the naturalistic type which here as usual has no ear-ring (a clearer example on Pl. GB 582), and the conventional type which has normally three or four vertical strokes within the upper curve and a large button over the lobe (better visible on Pl. GB 588, 3): on the whole the conventional ear is later than the naturalistic ear, though this remains regular for male figures, but becoming smaller and more niggling. For the mouth of these women the artist has drawn two parallel lines, a trick not uncommon in Clazomenian; here the lower line is much shorter than the upper.
