Much of a South Ionian pottery krater, mended from thirty fragments, mostly joining; decorated in the Wild Goat style; lower part of the body missing; the foot registered as 1886,0401.830b may belong. Flat everted rim; vertical double handles with rotelles. Inside reserved save band at top; double dot-band on top of rim, diagonals on outside; On neck, frieze of maeander and boxed rosettes. Reserved wheel pattern on outside of rotelles. Below there is a substantial glazed band, above a porrly preserved reserved area; on the shoulder similar compositions on both sides, though severe ware hampers comparision: deer left and right, framing geese; the birds preserved on one side have their head reversed. - Curator's comments
- For rim and neck parallels, see Cambridge NA11 and the discussion in Schlotzhauer 2012.
Polemarchos appears to have dedicated this pedestalled krater and the stand for another, which is curious and leads one to doubt, with Schlotzhauer (2012, 121) if the foot belongs to one and the same vase, or to a separate stand, whether designed to fit this krater or not.
