Description
Body sherd of large Clazomenian black-figured pottery closed vessel, possibly a neck-amphora; exterior: dilute line at top of sherd; below, black-figure decoration consisting of sphinx or siren to right (back of head with ear, spoked-wheel earring, hair and part of wing remaining with added red and added white for skin, fillet and on wing); at left, a palmette with tendrils (with red and white on petals and heart).

Curator's comments
For similar spoked-wheel earrings, see the amphora Alexandria 9498 (Venit 1988, 44-5, no. 159). Sirens are commonly depicted on vases from the Urla Group. This siren is more elaborately portrayed than usual for the Group.
