- Curator's comments
- Statues of male nudes of any type are rare on Cyprus before the Hellenistic period, though a few examples of kouroi made of local limestone are also known from the Apollo-Reshef sanctuary at Idalion. The now lost body of the Chatsworth Apollo from the Sanctuary of Apollo-Reshef at Tamassos was also naked - perhaps more examples existed in bronze that have been lost. Kunze observed that the original Polykleitan model was modified under Ionian influence by an 'auteur oriental', thereby implying Cyprus as the place of manufacture (1963, 67 and fig. 25).
For the architecture and finds at the sanctuary in general see Lang and Poole 1878, Masson 1968 and Senff 1993.
