Pottery: red-figured pelike.
(a) Two runners in the lampadedromia (torch race). Beside a goal two nude wreathed ephebi converse; the one on the left leans forward, with his left foot on raised flowery ground, and rests his left arm on the thigh; from the gesture of his right hand, he seems to be addressing his companion, who stands en face, holding up in his right a burning torch, which is provided with a shield above the handle. The goal is a plain shaft on a square base, the top edge of the shaft decorated with a row of dots, below which are four nearly vertical strokes (graining ?). Above the left hand figure, ΔΙΦΙΛΟΣ, Διφίλος.
(b) Two athletes. On the left a figure as in a, holding a strigil in his right hand, moves forward towards another who stands en face, but who turns to look at him; this figure holds two hurling rods, resting on the ground, and sloped along his right arm and shoulder; his left hand rests on his hip; he is wreathed, but his companion has a fillet with a vertical piece over the forehead. Between them, ΔΙΦΙΛΟΣ, Διφίλος.
Fine graceful style. Purple fillet, wreaths, inscriptions, flame, and ground-line in a. Light brown inner markings, which are also used for graining the top of the goal. Eye in profile, with eyelash. Below each side and on the neck, a strip of egg pattern; on the lower insertion of each handle, a palmette.
