- Description
-
Part of the first frieze, which is the lower, larger frieze at top of the podium of the Nereid monument. It represents a series of heroic combats.
The slab is in poor condition. It shows a fallen horse, his rider and two other figures. In the centre a wounded horse has fallen with its head on the ground. The rider, wearing a tunic, is stepping off his horse. On the left an opponent, wearing a chlamys, approaches. On the right another figure, wearing a tunic and chlamys, faces right. His shield is extended and his left foot is raised on a pile of rocks. The weapons and reins may have been painted.
