Carved relief, part of the East pediment of the Nereid Monument.
The centre of the pediment is dominated by two large seated figures, facing each other, between whom (in the exact centre of the pediment) are two small, draped female figures. To the right of the centre a bearded man with long hair is seated on a throne, facing left. He wears a large himation, covering the lower part of his body passing behind his back and onto his left shoulder, and shoes. In his right hand he holds a sceptre. One of the small female figures (head missing) stands at his knee. A dog lies curled up beneath the throne. To the left of centre a woman is seated on a throne, her right arm resting on its back. She wears a sleeved chiton and a large mantle over her head and covering the lower part of her body. She holds the mantle out with her left hand in a bridal gesture. The other small female figure stands at her knee and places both hands on her lap. To right and left, towards the angles of the pediment, are smaller figures. To the left, five figures stand. The one closest to the centre wears a short tunic and the other four wear himatia. To the right stand a group of six figures, draped in himatia. These flanking figures, eleven in total, are of a smaller scale than the central group. They may represent the royal family’s children. A dog lies in the angle at the far right, his head facing the centre.
This relief is a part of the monument as reconstructed. The far left corner is missing.
