Marble relief (Block V) from the North frieze of the Parthenon. The frieze shows the procession of the Panathenaic festival, the commemoration of the birthday of the goddess Athena.
This part of Block V shows a tray-bearer. Two more tray-bearers followed him. A tray-bearer (skaphephoros) is a non-citizen resident in Athens (metic) who carries in the procession a tray filled with honeycombs and cakes.
For more information on the North frieze see North frieze Block XLVII.
The northern branch of the procession follows a similar pattern to the southern.
