- Curator's comments
- "Condition: complete, chip from rim top, gouge below lower body, mild lime/iron oxide stain. Judging by the condition of other amphoras with a Victorian acquisition date, this amphora has been throughly cleaned at some fairly recent time.
Contents: patches of black in interior may be pitch.
Form: vertical banded rim, set away from fairly long neck which widens slightly downward, rolled handles, not extremely thick, with finger impression at base of handle, neck slopes directly into shoulder, shoulder/body line marked by very shallow finger drawn groove, maximum witdth in lower third of body but body not wide for this type, long spike toe with lower third broken away.
Fabric: Adriatic fabric, fine with some small dark grey quartz, rare medium red grog, one large piece of beige grog visible, some small lime, lots of minute gold mic. Fabric colour 10YR 7/3 very pale brown surface, no good break.
The form can be described as Lamb. 2/Dr. 6A, that is an early form of Dressel 6A, but it has relatively long handles and a very clear widening of the lower body, taking it quite far away from a Lamb. 2"
