Carved marble block from the East side of the continuous frieze of the temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai. The East and South frieze shows the battle between Amazons and the Greeks which was led by Herakles.
This block shows the aftermath of a battle. On the left a Greek drags his wounded or killed companion off the field on his back. In the centre an Amazon, dressed in a short peplos belted at the waist, draws away, a shield beside her. On the right another Greek, badly wounded in the right leg, leaves the battle-field. He leans with his right hand on a spear, now missing, his left arm round the neck of a companion, who supports him. The dead or injured Greeks are nude, their companions each wear an exomis. The block consists of several fragments that are in the British Museum and a plaster cast, which completes the top right part of the shield, the original of which is in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens (inv.no. NM 5144).
