‘A bas relief representing Castor taming his horse, accompanied by a dog – it is of the flat ancient style of Greek work - about three feet square –found by Mr Gavin Hamilton in the part of Hadrian’s villa, now called the Pantanella’ (First Townley Inventory, reliefs 11).
According to the documents relating to the purchase, this relief was sold to Townley as representing ‘Alexander and Bucephalus’, but Townley himself later consistently identified the youth as Castor, ‘an attribution unsupported by any evidence’ [Smith]. Reputed to have been found in Hadrian’s Villa by Gavin Hamilton about 1769 (1804 Parlour Catalogue) or in 1770 (TY 10/3, fo. 5) but evidently purchased in 1768, when Hamilton had not yet begun to excavate there.
For this piece Townley paid 150 Scudi (TY 10/1-2; TY 10/3, fo. 5; Simon Towneley's 'Union Catalogue', fo. 4r), which is rendered as £40 in TY 10/6 and TY 12/1 but as £25 in TY 10/7.

Errors in drapery show this cannot be exact copy of Parthenon period original, so ‘Classicizing Hadrianic’ (Bieber). Cottenham relief ca. 500 (Lippold, 84 note 15). Hadrianic, Early Classical syle (Golda). Early II (Walker).
