- Curator's comments
- The pipe referred to in the inscription on the reverse may be Oc-7910, which was presented by Miss Patteson in 1873 and registered as: "Sent home by Bishop Patteson. No history. Pres. by his sister." The inscription seems to refer to the pipe rather than to the painting, comprising the 'history' missing from the register slip. The painting may have been given at the same time but, in the practice of the time, was not registered, and the style of the man's ornaments look more like Malaita than Savo.
