- Description

Cloak (korowai) made of New Zealand flax fibre with woollen ornamentation. Woven in double-pair twining with selvedge commencement at bottom. Second and third wefts carry multicoloured looped woollen ornamentation; fourth weft is same but also carries running woollen cords of red and blue; fifth to seventh wefts carry running coloured woollen cords. Border on each side is of red, blue, yellow, green, black and white looped woollen decoration; inside these every weft carries running woollen cords, which form second vertical border on each side. Main surface is covered with black woollen hukahuka tags and rectangles of coloured woollen paheke decoration. Finish at top is braided and carries groups of coloured wool to form a kurupatu fringe. Single area of shaping, third of way down from top, consists of nine interpolated short wefts.
