Comment from Tara Hiquily, curator, Musée de Tahiti et ses Îles, during a visit to the stored collections, 19 June 2008: ‘This tapa has elements of various places; Cook Islands, Tahiti, Samoa, Niue, Pitcairn. The negative shapes in the cut-out sections are Cook Island in form. The triangular border is Tahitian in form.’ Tara drew parallels between the negative cut-outs that were lozenge in shape with spiky edges, like the caterpillar forms in some painted Cook Islands tapa at the British Museum and Kew Gardens.
