- Curator's comments
- Beasley catalogue reads: 1299 Solomon Group. Bougainville Isl.
'Bougainville' has been added after the original entry so may be conjectural.
Of two very similar examples, Oc1944,02.1392 is attributed to Bougainville and Oc1938.1001.23 has a conjectural provenance. Ribbe (1903:264) writes of Roviana: "Broad sleeve-like armbands with beautiful patterns, yellow, red and black, were sometimes brought in from Cape Grace and sometimes made by the people themselves and worn as festival decorations." (Cape Grace, so far unidentfied, could be Bougainville).
