- Curator's comments
-
During consultations conducted with Tiwi Islanders at Jilamara Arts Centre and Munupi Arts and Crafts in June 2011, this object was described as a water basket, but may also have been used to carry food. It is made from the fronds of a palm called 'paliwuni' in Tiwi, similar to the Carpentaria palm. It is described in Tiwi as a 'turlini'.

Noted by Tiwi artist Bede Tungatalum who visited the British Museum collections on 26 October 2015 that this was made by a woman and used for carrying water. Made from a palm.
