Pair of band ornaments for the arm, plaited of dark vine-strip and patterned with embroidery in red and yellow vine-strip
Length: 11.20 centimetres (27A, when flat)
- Curator's comments
- This pair are numbered 27 and 27A and are part of a set with numbers 17 to 26, all of the same design.
The embroidered design is securly attributed to Bougainville and Shortland Islands, as noted in the register: see
Finsch, O. 1914 Südseearbeiten. abb.499-503
Frizzi-Munchen, E. 1914 Ein Beitrag sur Ethnologie von Bougainville und Buka mit Spezieller Berücksichtigung der Nasoi. Baessler-Archiv: Beiträge zur Völkurunde Vol.6 p.26
Heermann, I. & Menter, U. 1990 Schmuck der Südsee, Ornament und Symbol: Objekte aus dem Linden-Museum, Stuttgart. p.84
However, as such ornaments were widely traded, Edge-Partington may have obtained them in the Western Solomons while he was based at Gizo.
