- Description

Circular flat based basket of plaited pandanus palm leaf. It has a two tone brown woven or firmly twined fibre strap handle. The 'woven' part is inside the basket, the ends of the cords protrude through the plaited sides of the basket and form long twisted cord tassels. At one side is attached through a central piercing an oval piece of white concave shell and a small irregular shaped piece of shell. Numbers 74 and 75 are nested inside it.

'76. Basket of plaited strips of Pandanus leaf, with band for handle, and shell, 8 strings attached, fitting outside [Oc1851,0103] 75. Height 7 inches, Diameter 8 inches. From New Guinea.'
