Christy collection registration slip description, written in the 1860s?:
Rarotonga
Wood shield 2 ft 3 in high, 1 ft 4 in wide at the bottom. In front is a central ridge - which as well as the side edges is carved with human figures.

Canoe stern board?. No old Rarotongan canoes survive or were depicted, so it is not certain if this is a canoe carving. The three fixing holes at the bottom suggest such a use. Carved in Rarotonga style, it has a plain back with a curved section at the top.
