- Description
-
Pipe bowl, unfinished, of argillite, crudely carved with a large raven surmounting a human figure, the head of which rises beneath the beak; on the back of the raven/pipe is a second figure, the head raised against the pipe bowl, holding a bird. The formlines are simply developed, and the treatment of the eyes, and the two human heads suggested a non-Haida origin.

- Curator's comments
- With this is a Truro label which reads in ink: 'Stone pipe from the NW Coast of America Presented by Mrs Taylor' and in pencil 'between 27 Aug 1830 27 Aug 1831.' The carving style suggests that it is not Haida, but from further south, and is perhaps even made of argillite found on Vancouver Island rather than the Charlottes. A collection of Vancouver Island pipes is in Maidstone Museum. [JCK 24/6/97]
