- The USS Constitution was launched in 1797, and survives in Boston - see web site for the Department of the Navy , Naval Historical Center, 805 Kidder Breese SE, Washington Navy Yard, Washington DC 20374-5060, USA. This suggests that the 'Constitution' was Pacific squadron flagship 1839-1841. Bill Holm in 'Faces Voices Dreams', p 153 suggests that another model by the same maker is in Florida State Museum (P-1269), and says that the carving styles of both bow figures is Tlingit. - This object was purchased from Robert Bruce Inverarity in 1976. In his accompanying notes (Eth. Doc. 1225), he records that he purchased the object from David and David Incorporated (fine art dealers) in Philadelphia in 1971. The object was accompanied by a calling card belonging to Commodore L. C. Sartori, who had been commander of the Philadelphia Naval Yard in 1874 and had served at Mare Island Naval Base in San Francisco in 1872 and on the USS Constitution in the Pacific in 1843, placing his aquisition of the object somewhere between these dates.
