Letter James Ashbury, Carlton Club, June 10th - 'Prior to the time of the Spaniards on the West Coast of South America it is understood Peru and adjacent countries were governed by a council of 24 Incas, who sat in stone chairs.
2 or 3 years ago I was at Guayaquil in Ecuador, & picked up 2 of these stone chairs which our Consul there said undoubtedly were from the Incas time. One I gave to the Brighton Museum, the other is at 6 [illeg] Terrace.
If you care to cause it to be inspected with a view to my giving it to the British Museum. I shall be glad to arrange accordingly, and it may be that the B.M. does not already possess one.'
