Letter A E Douglass, New York/C H Read, 24 Nov 1887 and 'Invoice of Objects, worked in Stone & Shell by American Indians ... sent, in Exchange ... Selected from the Private Collection of A E Douglass Esq. in the Museum of Natural History, New York.
Douglass writes 'The "Scrapers" of the same material from Missouri, are made with the same taste and care [as the 'hoes']. The patterns are varied, and some indicate that the first form adopted by the workman in working the cruder material was the Spear head or arrowhead, and subsequently this was modified to answer the requirements of the native, whether as scraper or awl or reamer, while both were capable of immediate use as knives or cutters.
