Small basketry bag (a) filled with cowrie shells (b). Bag is woven from strips of natural, purple- and green-dyed fibre. Secured with lengths of fibre wrapped around bag.
Part of an artwork in the form of a ship, based on the print of the Liverpool slave ship 'The Brookes'.

- Cowrie shells were one of the items traded by Europeans to Africa, often in exchange for enslaved people.
This bag is part of the multi-media artwork 'La Bouche du Roi'.The formal structure of the artwork is based on the print of the Liverpool slave ship the Brookes which was commissioned in 1789 by the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade.
