- Curator's comments
- Eth.Doc.364. Many of the objects in this collection were previously displayed in an exhibition,'The Arts of the Hausa', at the Commonwealth Institute, 1976, as part of the World of Islam Festival. Hausa basketry uses a limited range of colours. For these mats the red dye was probably obtained from red potash or the leaves of a type of sorghum, while imported dye powder produced the black colour.
