- Description

Woman's head-shawl (bakhnuq) made of wool and cotton. Rectangular shawl has black-dyed wool warp and weft with supplementary weft patterns in light blue ? cotton. Patterns are placed in horizontal bands at either end of shawl and comprise linear bands and individual geometric motifs such as lozenges, chevrons and triangles. Similar geometric patterns in centre of shawl are arranged in three separate blocks; outer two are flanked at top and bottom with three-pronged motifs. Short wool and cotton fringes at both ends.

- Eth.Doc.362. Women use square or rectangular cloths to cover the head and hair in rural Tunisia. These may be pulled across the face when outside the home especially in front of strangers.

- Poor; dye has worn away ? throughout leaving brownish colour. Numerous holes and damaged areas. Much worn.

- This fieldwork collection was purchased, together with Af1998,02-03, using BP (British Petroleum) sponsorship in February-March 1998. Textiles (Af1998,01.17-54) were purchased from Ahmad Tahar Zribi, Sfax, on 25.2.1998 for 3,200 TD (Tunisian dinar).
