Woman's head-shawl (bakhnuq) made of wool and cotton. Rectangular shawl with short loose red wool fringes at either end. Red-dyed wool warp with alternating red- and black-dyed wool weft arranged in horizontal bands. Geometric weft patterns in white cotton within black wool bands comprising chevrons, triangles, lozenges and zigzags. This arrangement is broken in two places on either side of the centre of the cloth: three black wool bands terminate in long narrow points, remaining central area has plain red wool. Red wool bands in this area have narrow horizontal double white cotton bands inserted. Patterns on the black wool bands end about five centimeters from the edges of the shawl.

- Eth.Doc.362. Women use square or rectangular cloths to cover the head and hair in rural Tunisia. These may be pulled across the face when outside the home especially in front of strangers.

- This fieldwork collection was purchased, together with Af1998,02-03, using BP (British Petroleum) sponsorship in February-March 1998. Textiles (Af1998,01.17-54) were purchased from Ahmad Tahar Zribi, Sfax, on 25.2.1998 for 3,200 TD (Tunisian dinar).
