- Curator's comments
-
The photograph shows the pot made by Ladi Kwali together with a larger traditional Gwari pot which was given by Michael O’Brien (Af1989,14.11).
-
This vessel was produced at the Pottery Training Centre, established in 1951 by Michael Cardew, at Abuja in Nigeria. Cardew introduced the potter's wheel and the techniques of glazing and high firing to the local potters who trained at the Centre. Among one of the first to arrive in 1954 was a female Gwari potter named Ladi Kwali. The design on this pot features well-known Gwari patterns; it is probable that Ladi Kwali made this pot under the supervision of Michael Cardew.
