- Description

A large, ovular shield of scraped, cleaned and stretched hide, the facing side painted with a number of motifs in reddish brown and black pigment, the entire design being divided into two halves by the "es segira", a stylised representation of a chain of cowrie shells. The rim of the shield is strenthened by wooden sections secured by thongs, and on the reverse side a perpendicular piece of wood has also been secured, the middle section of which has been fashioned into a hand-grip.

- Transferred from the Ethnography Department's Handling Series which in turn acquired it from the Department's "Duplicate" collections. Previously unregistered, and original source and date of acquisition unknown.
