- Acquisition notes
- Af1958,14.1 to 67 were given by Henry Bassett. The register records that nos.1-27 had been "collected in Angola before 1875 by J.J. Monteiro, and some were illustrated in his book 'Angola and the River Congo' (1875). J. Monteiro was the donor's brother-in-law." Monteiro was in Angola 1858-75.
Nos.28-67 did not come from Monteiro. Nos 35 to 55 must have been collected by his widow Rosa (née Bassett, 1840-1898), who remained in Mozambique between 1878 and c.1890 after her husband's death, and wrote a book titled 'Delagoa Bay: its natives and natural history', published in 1891.
Nos.56-64 seem to have been collected by Henry Bassett himself in Tanganyika between 1953 and 1954. It is not clear who collected nos.28 to 34, of which the first two are thought to be Asante.
