Papier-maché model of a mask, yellowish with raised bars on face, & projecting mouth & eye rings, painted black, with picked rope fringe.
"Masque Anyang Cross River. JB.1889" on label inside.
This mask might be no.44 in the 1954 list supplied by Dr J S Harris:
"Represents head of man. Skin covering is mgbada, a bush animal, probably duiker. During performance of play, hair of ram is tied to back of mask. Woven basket fitted into base which was placed on head of dancer. Rope also passed through hole in base and around dancer’s chin."
It is also possible that it was registered as part of his collection in error.
