The Museum accessioned the objects primarily by ethnic group: Batutsi (1-48) and Bahutu (49 to 65); followed by a typological series of objects shared by the two groups (66-201); then Batwa (202-329); Banyaruanda plant specimens and dyes for basket making (330-364); Baciga (south-west Uganda) (365-392); Bahavu (Idjwi Island, Lake Kivu) (393-419); and finally miscellaneous (420-5). Lister recorded his acquisitions in a typed list which runs to 223 numbers, with detailed notes on each. The Register entries follow the order of the list, but often divide Lister's single item into several items, which explains the 425 Register entries. Lister's original numbers are recorded in the margin. Lister organised his acquisitions from the two trips by ethnic group rather than by place of acquisition as follows: Batutsi nos.1 to 45; Bahutu nos.46 to 107; Batwa nos.107 to 151; Banyaruanda plant specimens, dyes and basket making nos.152 to 177; Baciga (south-west Uganda) nos.178 to 201; Bahavu (Idjwi Island, Lake Kivu) nos.202 to 223.
