Sample, a long strip of European striped sateen cotton, folded in two across the centre, and with the sides sewn together. It has been embroidered through both folds with two lines of zigzags along the whole strip. After being dyed in indigo, a section of one of the row of zigzags along the centre has been unpicked to reveal the pattern in blueish white, which contrasts with the solid blue of the stitched areas.

- Curator's comments
- This is an example of the third stage of ‘embroidery’ dyeing in Beving’s ‘series illustrating the technology of dyeing’. Two of the photos show either side of the cloth after the stitching had been partially removed to reveal part of the design reserved in white. It is one of five examples of this stage (Af1934,0307.341 to 345), each with a different design used by the embroiderers. All the examples are noted as having come from Saint Louis in Senegal.
