- Description
-
Indigo wrapper, composed of European white calico divided into fifteen strips, which have been dyed in indigo in two groups of 8 and 7 with different patterns, and then reassembled and hand-sewn together. 8 of the strips have been folded in half, pleated and gathered along the length before being rope-tied and dyed, to produce an effect of striations along the cloth. The other 7 have also been folded in half, and stitched with elaborate patterns of chevrons and diamonds which repeat either side of the fold and show as white against indigo. A fringe of twisted threads was sewn onto the ends and dyed in indigo with the rest of the cloth.
