- Description
-
Cloth (perhaps a baby-tie): a single width, hand-woven from raffia and machine-spun imported European cotton. The warp is entirely of raffia of a single shade of brown. The weft is of white cotton, using three threads in each pass of the weft. The cloth has been woven in such a way that 25 bands of openwork have been created across the weft by twisting pairs of raffia together. Through each of these openwork bands a single thread of indigo cotton has been passed; a single thread of indigo cotton has also been placed along the outer edges of the warp. The warp ends of the raffia have been left as a long fringe.

- Acquisition notes
- Af1928,0711.9 to 23 is a group of raffia and cotton cloths. The register records that they were all 'bought in the market at Lagos, acquired in 1889-94'. The date is certain as Sir Robert Johnstone was only in Africa in those years.
