- Description
-
Cloth (perhaps a baby-tie): a single width, hand-woven from machine-spun European white, red and black cotton. The warp threads are all of white cotton, woven as pairs. The wefts threads are of black, white or red cotton, using three threads in each pass of the weft. These create a pattern of broken thin colour stripes across the width of the cloth; the width of the stripes, the sequence of colours, and the spaces left between the stripes varies. The warp ends have been left loose and have been twisted to form long fringes.

- Af1928,0711.9 to 23 is a group of raffia and cotton cloths. The register records that they were all 'bought in the market at Lagos, acquired in 1889-94'. The date is certain as Sir Robert Johnstone was only in Africa in those years.
