'Collected on the South Eastern Coast of Cape Colony about five miles south of the mouth of the Great Fish River. The chipped stones were, for the most part, dug out from the side near the ground of a large kitchen midden, which is from 40 to 50 ft in height, and has a considerable amount of vegetation, trees etc on its top. The fragments of pot were also found there. The perforated stone and a few of the chipped stones were found on the top of a hill about a quarter of a mile inland. The kitchen middens are of great extent, reaching for more than a quarter of a mile along the shore. The bulk of them apparently consists of marine shells, oysters, mussels, clams, mixed with bones of animals and fragments of pots and chipped stones... '
