- Af1910,0420.1 to 640 come from Emil Torday's expedition to the Congo between 1907 and 1909; they are one of several groups of Congo material purchased from him (see his biography). The register records which Congo group they came from, and there are occasional notes on their function.
NB The group that Torday called the 'Bakongo' has since been identified as the 'Bawongo' (see Mack in Tom Phillips ed. 'Africa,the art of a Continent', 1995, sv. cat.4.41), and the records for nos.1 to 164 have been adjusted to reflect this.
