- Af1907,0529.1 to 536 is a collection purchased from the Hungarian anthropologist, Emil Torday, which he had recently formed in the Congo. They come from the period when he was employed by the Kasai Company from late 1904-1906, when he had been commissioned by T A Joyce (Curator, British Mediaeval Antiquities and Ethnography dept) to collect for the Museum. The objects come from the Basin between the rivers Kwilu and Kwango, and are works from the Mbala, Yaka, Bahuanga, Bayanzi, Babunda, Bakwese, Pende people and others; towards the end are items from areas he had never visited.
The arrangement as described in the register is by ethnic group: the Bambala (1-136); the BaYaka (137-157); the Battuana (158-206); the BaYanzi (207-279); the BaBunda (280-304); the BaKwese (305-315); the BaPindi (316-333); the rest is a miscellany (334-536).
Many of the items were published in the 'Journal of the Anthropological Institute', XXXVI and XXXVII, and references to these articles are given in the register together with many comments on the objects and their functions.
