- Curator's comments
- Mutare (formerly Umtali) is the fourth largest city in Zimbabwe, close to the border with Mozambique. Although the city was founded in 1897, the region has a long history of trading caravans passing through this area on the routes from the Indian Ocean, such as the port of Sofola, to inland settlements, such as the Great Zimbabwe. There is a long history of soapstone carvings and figures in Zimbabwe, like this object, and evidence of trade routes estimated from the late African Iron Age (c. 900 AD) through successive kingdoms in the region up to the colonial period.
