- Curator's comments
- Purchased by A W Franks from Eckhart in Hamburg in 1872, with no provenance. Attributed by him to Madagascar on the basis of a similar instrument that had been published by Lieut. Oliver in the 'Memoirs of the Anthropological Society' of London, III p.18 fig.2, where it was described as a 'Zokanga' from Madagascar; he gave it to the BM on 28 October 1872 and had it inventoried next to the similar instrument given by R G Whitfield (Af.8023).
