- Acquisition notes
- Af,+.2214 to 2270 is a collection formed by the missionary Henry Wills Lane, who worked as Lay Superintendant of the CMS mission at Frere Town in Mombasa between 1882 and 1884. There is no reason to think that he travelled himself, and his collection contains objects from many of the groups with which he came into contact in Mombasa. On his return to England in August 1884, his collection was acquired by A W Franks who presented it to the BM in December 1884.
Nos.2247 to 2270 are all spears, and are all recorded as from Zanguebar. This does not refer to Zanzibar, but was used in the later XIXc for what is often now called the Swahili Coast.
