- Curator's comments
- Fani siri (tie-dyed indigo) cloths are decorated with weft float patterns and subsequently overdyed with indigo using fold-resist methods. This is a modern example using the over-dyeing fold-resist technique, but without the weft float patterning or the single red strip at one side.
Cloths of this type were produced by Jula (Dyula) dyers for Baule patrons during the 1930s. Similar tie-dye cloths were produced later by the Baule. The attribution of individual cloths is difficult, though the late date of this cloth makes an attribution to the Baule more likely. See Kerstin Bauer in Bernhard Gardi (ed.), 'Woven Beauty', 2009, plates 113 and 114.
