Norman Hardy worked as a special artist with The Sydney Mail from 1891 and made paintings on travels in Melanesia, China and Africa, many of which were published in books such as The Savage South Seas (1907), Women of all Nations (1908-9) and volumes by Torday and Joyce on the Belgian Congo (1922).
