Book, Logbook of a Voyage to or rather from Melbourne, Calcultta, Madras & Rangoon 1857 by the ship Schah Jehan 1857-1858 (a ship used by emigrants to Australia). Includes entry for 31 May 1857 sailing from Melbourne to Calcutta with freight list including '21 Cases of Curiosities and 100 casks of ships beef and pork'.
Ship under command of Captain Cox, went from London to Melbourne, from Melbourne to Calcutta, from Calcutta back to Madras, from Madraws to Rangaoon, Akyab to Calcultta, and then Calcultta towards London via St. Helena and Ascension.
34 pages with another 10 pages on sailing and another 45 pages on receipts for illness and food recipes used when sailing. Vellum binding with brass catch.
Log consists of title, then 7 pages of description to Melbourne, then pages following describing journey from Melbourne to Madras, Burma, Calcultta, followed by 8 pages on the return to London. Entries for date, course, distance, wind speeds, latitude and longitude and general remarks. Other loose sheets. Also includes 19 pages on sailing and 45 pages of receipts of materials (eg. gangrene oils, foot rox mixture, colic balls). Some pages have shorthand lessons and a pencil drawing of ship.
Several other print outs regarding the vessel and notices regarding arrival of ship and a 5 page passenger list.

- Brass catch does not shut as a few blank sheets have been removed (likely put to good use on the voyage for hygiene purposes), velum is darkened and marked, vellum crack at the front spine edge. Binding is secure, tidy and bright internally. neat repair to one sheet.
