- Oliver Knowles was a forester trained at Midhurst, West Sussex, who responded to an article which indicated that a forester was required in Peru. He was accepted for the role, and in 1954 move to the Perene Colony to search for timber suitable for railway sleepers. During his time there he had contact with the indigenous Ch'uncho peoples from whom he acquired the objects in this collection. He returned to England in 1960 having completed his work and produced a report which is now held in the UCL Special Collections.
