The Northern Cape is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa, and lies south of the Orange River. The province contains both engravings and paintings which tend to have distinct distributions. However, engravings predominate in the region and are generally situated on boulders or exposed expanses of rock in the landscape, but also on the edges of rivers or even in a river bed as at Driekopseiland.
